Conversion tracking is the most foundational piece of any digital marketing analytics setup, and it is one of the most commonly broken. The symptoms are familiar: purchase events that fire on page load instead of on order completion, form submission events that count every submission including test entries, click-to-call events that fire on mobile but not desktop, or Google Ads conversions that are double-counting because two different tracking methods are both active simultaneously.
Bad conversion data does not just produce inaccurate reports. It actively misleads your campaign optimization. Google Ads uses your conversion data to train its bidding algorithms. If your conversions are overcounting, your campaigns will optimize toward traffic that appears to convert but does not. If they are undercounting, your campaigns will undervalue high-performing audiences and ad groups. Either way, your ad spend is working against you.
Our conversion tracking setup service corrects existing implementations and builds new ones with the precision that accurate campaign management requires.
What Our Conversion Tracking Consultants Set Up
Conversion tracking setup covers the full spectrum of actions that represent meaningful business outcomes on your site. The specific events depend on your business model, but our engagements typically address some combination of the following:
Purchase and Transaction Events
eCommerce purchase events need to fire exactly once, on the order confirmation page, after a successful transaction. They need to carry the transaction ID so duplicate conversions can be deduplicated, the transaction value so revenue is reported accurately, and the currency code so multi-currency reporting works correctly. We validate all three and verify that the event does not fire on page refresh, which is one of the most common sources of purchase event inflation.
Lead Form Submissions
Form submission tracking is more complex than it appears because forms behave differently depending on how they are built. Some forms redirect to a confirmation page on submission, which makes tracking straightforward. Others submit via AJAX and display a success state without a page reload, which requires a different tracking approach. Others use embedded third-party form tools like HubSpot or Typeform that have their own event systems. We assess the form infrastructure and implement tracking that matches how the form actually works rather than applying a generic solution that may not fire correctly.
Phone Call Tracking
Click-to-call tracking captures when a mobile visitor taps a phone number link. This is distinct from call tracking platforms like CallRail that record inbound call volume, though we can integrate both. Click-to-call events should fire on the tap action itself, not on page load, and should capture the phone number that was clicked so calls to different numbers can be attributed separately.
Key Micro-Conversions
Depending on your funnel, some pre-conversion actions are worth tracking as micro-conversions: brochure downloads, video completions, account registrations, quote requests, or chat initiations. We assess which micro-conversions are meaningful for your business and add tracking for those alongside the primary conversion events.
Platform Coverage
Conversion events need to reach the right platforms to be useful. A purchase event in GA4 alone does not help your Google Ads campaigns optimize. We configure conversion tracking across every platform where the data needs to land:
- Google Analytics 4 with correctly designated key events and conversion marking
- Google Ads via GA4 import or direct Google Ads conversion tags, with deduplication to prevent double-counting when both methods are active
- Meta (Facebook/Instagram) via the Meta pixel with server-side event API where applicable for improved match rates
- Microsoft Advertising (Bing) with UET tag and conversion goal configuration
- LinkedIn insight tag with conversion event configuration for B2B campaigns
- TikTok pixel with event tracking for direct-response campaigns
For organizations with significant ad spend, we also configure Enhanced Conversions in Google Ads, which improves conversion measurement accuracy by passing hashed first-party data alongside conversion events to improve match rates when cookies are unavailable.
How the Engagement Works
We begin with an audit of your existing conversion tracking setup. This involves reviewing your GTM container, your GA4 property, and your advertising platform conversion goals to map what is currently configured and identify any issues. The audit produces a findings document that specifies what needs to be fixed and what needs to be built from scratch.
Implementation follows the audit. All work is done in GTM where possible to keep the implementation maintainable and auditable. Each conversion event is QA'd in GTM preview mode and verified in the destination platform before the container is published. For GA4 events, we use GA4 DebugView to confirm the event and its parameters are arriving correctly. For Google Ads conversions, we use Tag Assistant and the Google Ads conversion action status page to confirm the tag is firing and being attributed correctly.
We deliver a brief implementation summary at the close of the engagement documenting what was built, how each tag is triggered, and any ongoing monitoring considerations.
Note on consent compliance: All conversion tags we configure are set up to respect Google Consent Mode signals. If you have a consent management platform in place, we verify that the consent signals are reaching the conversion tags correctly. If you do not, we flag this as a compliance consideration and can scope a CMP implementation separately — read our guide on implementing OneTrust, Ketch, and Cookiebot for more context.
